The session is a follow-up on the previous discussion on starting a literature review. The session explores how to write a literature review. The questions being answered are:
- How to identify research gaps and the types of research gap
- How to organize literature and present summaries as part of the literature review
At the end of the session, students should be able to know how to summarize literature and write out a review. The literature review usually provides a detailed analysis of the research topic or theme from the perspective of existing or previous literature. It also critiques and proposes perspectives or ways of addressing the research problem or research questions.
The session will also explain Literature Referencing. The act of providing evidence for arguments and perspectives presented in literature write up – article, long essay, report and et cetera.
- References provided within the text or the body of the text
- Compiled references at the end of the text

After this session,i am convinced that long essay will not be difficult though it will involve hardwork. I believe with these lessons and skills you have taught,we will have the upperhand.
welcome
I share Adwoa’s views. Unlike how we were made to believe that research is difficult and boring, It seems Sir Richard is proving that wrong. We hope continue seeing this course this way-thought provoking and interesting.
I just read an interesting article on ‘Criminal Disinfranchisement’. I wish I could do a research in that area but how feasible with it be, Sir, especially since there is limited research output on this topic on the research databases, particularly relating to Ghana. Can you advice me?
start by searching for the ‘limited’ literature…
Please How to identify the research framework of a paper is still something I am struggling to do. I know a research framework can be theory or concept, But spotting which is which in a paper appears difficult for me. Any help?
Not all papers have a research framework – if there is one it will be quite obvious and mostly likely stated.
Thanks. today’s section on research frameworks has clarified how theories and concepts are used by researchers. I will try identifying them now in literature that have them.
In including another author’s reference as part of your work, whose name should you put in the bracket- the original author’s name(whose literature you might not have reviewed) or the second author’s name( from whose work you came across the finding)
It should be like this- (Banson, 2009 as cited in Boateng, 2011).
Sir, in reference to research framework, is one allowed to use a his or her own theory in a situation where the new theory excludes the criticisms against established theories
You can rather review literature to develop your own conceptual framework – but should acknowledge the strengths and weakness in existing models and theories.
